History

The Young Peoples Theatre was established in 1963, when the People’s Theatre Arts Group moved to its current venue in Heaton.  Since then thousands of young people have taken part in over 100 productions from Shakespeare to Brecht to Pratchett.

Productions have been directed by group leaders such as Nick Whitfield, older youth members of the group, and visiting directors from the Royal Shakespeare Company. There have been collaborations with other youth theatres in the United States, Ireland and Germany, and ambitious new writing and self devised work.

Some  of our past members have gone on to careers in the theatre, film, in comedy, as writers, directors and stage technicians.

All our members take away life-enhancing experiences.

Do you have any memories of the Young People’s Theatre? Let us know. We’d love to hear from you.
